A note-for-note transcription of the first of several arrangements from the recent Rock Swings album by Paul Anka. This chart was arranged by Randy Kerber, one of a trio of world-class big band arrangers employed by Paul Anka for this fabulous CD. The arrangement is medium-tempo swing and features baritone sax to begin with. After a key change from E minor to F minor, an ensemble instrumental section is followed by a solo for alto sax. After a rousing climax for the whole band involving some interesting chromatically descending polychords (see score sample), the piece finishes with the trombones growling an Fm9(maj7) chord with a fall-off, imitating the tiger of the title. Arranged for 5444 big band, complete with score and parts.

Risin' up, back on the street,
Did my time, took my chances.
I went the distance, now I'm back on my feet,
Just a man with the will to survive.
And many times, it happened too fast,
You change your passion for the glory.
Don't lose your grip on dreams of the past,
You gotta fight to keep them alive.
It's the eye of a tiger, cream of the fight,
Risin' up to challenge a rival.
The last known survivor stalks prey in the night,
Watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger.
Face to face, out in the night,
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry.
They stack the odds till we take 'em to the street,
We kill with a skill to survive.
Yes, it's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight,
Risin' up to challenge a rival.
And it's the last known survivor who stalks in the night,
Watchin' us all in the eye of a tiger.
Risin' up, straight to the top,
I got the guts, got the glory.
I went the distance, not gonna stop,
Just a man with a will to survive, yes.
Hey, and it's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight,
Rising up to challenge a rival.
It's the last known survivor stalking prey in the night,
Watchin' us all in the eye of a tiger, the eye of a tiger.
Yes, he's ready to fight, stalking prey in the night,
And he's watchin' . . . of a tiger.
Grrr!
